Event Details

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply conceptual framework of a medical charting system to the organization and use of an Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Understand and use an Electronic Health Record (EHR) in a medical office.
  • Apply federal and state regulations and policies to facilitate EHR utilization in the Health Services industry.
  • Incorporate knowledge of EHR and Personal Health Record (PHR) into their personal health care decisions.
  • Apply relevant ethical, legal, and security principles to the use of EHR within the health information

 

CONTENT

Understand basic concepts and functionality of (Electronic Health Record) EHR’s and (Patient Medical Record) PMR’s or (Electronic Medical Record) EMR.

    • Know how to navigate in the system easily
    • Understand the importance of data back-up
    • Differentiate between electronic medical records (EMR) and a practice management system
    • Describe the process in compliance report with regard to errors inpatient care

 

Apply this understanding of EHR functionality in the actual use of student version of an EHR.

    • Create a patient’s medical record
    • Input patient data into the HER
    • Document patient care accurately into the medical record
    • Identify methods of organizing the patient’s medical record based on either problem-oriented medical records (POMR) or source-oriented medical records (SOMR)

Understand how EHR functionality may differ depending on what environment you work in.

 

Understand basic concepts of recent federal and state policies supporting adoption of EHR’s and Meaningful Use.

    • Be able to explain meaningful use at it applies to EMR

 

Understand basic concepts of implementation process

    • Explore how technology influences implementation and use of EHRs.
    • Apply learning to work environments using and/or implementing EHRs.

 

Understand Personal Health Records history

 

Understand HIPAA and what that means for practices with EHR’s, EMR’s and PMR’s.

    • Apply HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act) to the EMR and its use
    • Protect the integrity of the medical record

 

Perform routine maintenance of the EHR include back-ups

 

TRAINING METHODOLOGY

The training methodology combines lectures, discussions, group exercises and illustrations. Participants will gain both theoretical and practical knowledge of the topics. The emphasis is on the practical application of the topics and as a result participant will go back to the workplace with both the ability and the confidence to apply the techniques learned to their duties.
